Primary Education at Lough Gur NS

At Lough Gur NS, teaching and learning are at the heart of everything we do. We take great pride in offering an education that is both high in quality and deeply personal. Every child is known, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential in a caring and structured environment.

Teaching and Learning

Learning at Lough Gur NS follows the Primary School Curriculum, enriched through active, child-centred approaches. Literacy and numeracy remain central, with pupils engaging in daily reading, writing, oral language, and problem-solving activities. Lessons are practical and engaging, encouraging children to question, explore, and make connections across subjects.

Individual Support

Our low pupil-teacher ratio allows us to provide individual attention and targeted support. Teachers plan together to ensure each pupil receives the help and challenge they need to progress confidently. Additional support is provided by our Special Education Teacher, who works closely with classroom teachers to deliver tailored learning and small-group interventions.Click here to add text.

A Broad and Balanced Curriculum

Pupils enjoy a well-rounded education across all areas: English, Gaeilge, Mathematics, SESE, the Arts, PE, and SPHE . This supports them to develop not only academically but socially, emotionally, and creatively. Technology is woven through everyday learning, supporting research, writing, and presentation skills.

We are actively implementing the Primary Curriculum Framework (2023), placing a strong emphasis on experiences, real-life learning, and pupil voice. Lessons are designed to connect learning to the world around us, from exploring nature and local heritage to applying problem-solving and creativity in meaningful contexts. This approach helps pupils see the purpose of what they learn and encourages curiosity, independence, and joy in learning.

Assessment and Growth

We use a variety of approaches to track progress and celebrate success, from informal teacher observation and pupil self-assessment to standardised testing in literacy and numeracy. Our focus is always on growth and confidence: helping pupils to see their own improvement and to take pride in their learning journey.

Wellbeing and Classroom Life

At Lough Gur NS, wellbeing is central to learning. Our classrooms are calm, inclusive spaces where pupils feel safe, valued, and motivated to do their best. Through circle time, cooperative activities, and positive relationships, children learn empathy, respect, and teamwork, skills that extend far beyond school life.
