Hands-on learning

Hands-on learning at Lough Gur NS brings the curriculum to life. Through practical experiences and creative exploration, pupils learn skills that stay with them far beyond the classroom.

Cooking and baking

Pupils learn about food, nutrition, literacy and numeracy skills through regular cooking and baking. We harvest our own fruit and vegetables, prepare hot dinners and healthy snacks, and contribute baked goods for local fundraisers. We also mark special occasions through food and explore other places and cultures by cooking simple dishes from around the world. These activities build practical maths, procedural writing, teamwork, and healthy habits.

Gardening and sustainability

Our school garden is a busy and colourful space where pupils learn through planting, caring, and harvesting. We grow strawberries, blackberries, herbs, carrots, onions, and potatoes, using many of them later in our cooking and baking. Pupils also help to maintain our Bee Friendly Garden, a space that encourages kindness and supports pollinators through the flowers we plant. Gardening teaches pupils about growth, pollination, and caring for the environment. They harvest seeds to store for the following year and learn how small actions can make a big difference to our planet.

Stem and creative learning

Through hands-on STEM activities, pupils explore science and technology in action. They carry out simple experiments, build models, and work collaboratively to solve problems. A critical orientation is encouraged in every task so that pupils understand what they are doing, why it happens, and how to explain and defend their ideas logically and confidently. These experiences foster curiosity, reasoning, and problem-solving skills while helping pupils connect what they learn in the classroom to the world around them.

Art, drama, and music

Creativity is central to learning at Lough Gur NS. Pupils expressed themselves through art, drama, and music, taking inspiration from local history and nature. These creative projects build confidence, imagination, and a strong sense of joy in learning.

Outdoor learning

Our school grounds and the surrounding area of Lough Gur provide a rich outdoor classroom. Pupils learn through exploration, nature walks, and outdoor lessons that support wellbeing, environmental awareness, and a connection to our local heritage.
